Couldn't get the whole desk in one shot, so there's the main part on
the left, and the extension wing to the right (along with my ever-present
helper). I'm planning to make a chest of file drawers to fit under
the extension wing next. This desk is fully modular and can be assembled
several different ways. The extension wing can be placed on either
side of the corner unit, and you can add as many extension units as you
want. The whole thing is held together with knock-down fasteners
and a few bolts/threaded inserts. The complexity of this piece is
quite high as there are a lot of parts and some critical dimensions need
to be held exactly for it to all fit together. It was made from a
plan in Woodsmith #109, and unlike my usual practice of making lots of
changes to a plan, I didn't dare with this one or I was afraid it would
never go together. Wise move, it turns out. Even with my attention
to the plan, there were still a few parts that didn't fit as smoothly as
I'd like. In hindsight, I now realize the dimensions that are critical
and would watch them closely if I were ever to make this again even though
the magazine never made mention of it. E-mail me below for some free
advice, if you are planning to make it. Finish is Watco Dark Walnut.
I applied a topcoat of Paddylac SuperBlonde shellac only on the trim around
the tabletop, where I expect most wear.
