So
I finally finished the picture frame and we got it back from the frame
shop. I don't have a mat cutter or the equipment to dry-mount, so
we let the pros do that part. Besides, with how often I would do
it, it isn't worth me getting the equipment and learning the process.
My woodworking projects are slow enough without adding more tasks to my
list... Anyway, this frame (and the dovetailed bench) is made from
one 4/4 QS White Oak board. I managed to work around almost all of
the knots (few, but in bad locations) except one which I routed out and
patched (see lower photo). The joinery is full-blind mortise and
tenon, with square walnut pegs. The pegs have been carved to a pyrimid-shape
as seen below (same as the footstools). Finish is 2-3 coats of Watco
Natural and a couple coats of PaddyLac Lemon Shellac in Denatured Alcohol,
wiped/padded on, and rubbed out with white Scotch-Brite. Both this
and the bench have a totally handplaned finish, except for the top rail
of the picture frame which I had to sand due to some really squirrly grain.
Here is one place I wish the video camera produced better photos, as the
picture is kinda poor but, hey, what can you do?
The above mentioned patch and most of a square walnut peg. The
patch looked almost invisible.... until I started finishing.... It
still is not very visible, so I am OK with it. The worst part of
it was the point of the patch, that didn't quite fit tight. Patch
was routed out and squared up by hand chisel work, then the patch was cut
and chiseled to fit, tapering the sides slightly to improve the fit.
This is the upper right corner of the frame.
