Mary Ellen found a group at her book club meeting. They had read Michner's "Carribean". While sipping wine after the discussion, one of the girl's mentioned how she longed to take a Caribbean Cruise. Mary Ellen told her how her parents had raved about the cruise they had taken for their 45th wedding anniversary.

The more her parents had talked about the adventure, the more Mary Ellen wanted to go but knew it was beyond her financial situation at this time. Then she remembered her mother had metnioned that she'd met a woman on board who was cruising free because she got a group together from her retirement community. The woman had told her she only needed 15 people to go as a group and she could go free.

And so the idea was planted in Mary Ellen's mind. She went to her parent's travel agent, got information about the cruise, took it to the next book club meeting. Six months later, Mary Ellen, her husband, the book group and their husbands, plus assorted friends who signed up to go, were cruising out of Miami to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.

Mary Ellen took a copy of one of Michner's book with her on the cruise. This time it was, "South Pacific". She wanted to get some ideas for her next free cruise.

Bob R was a retired utilities worker. He'd been with his the company 26 years and had been an active member of the local union. He had also been a member of the American Legion for almost as long. Other union members were in the Legion and Bob enjoyed being with Alex, his buddy from work. It was after Alex's untimely death that Bob took stock.

Thinking about Alex and some of the things Alex had talked about doing some day, Bob thought of things in life he wated to do. He made a list. At the top of the list was to visit Australia. Bob's father had talked about his time in Australia returning from the war.

The more Bob thought about it, the more the desire grew. When another buddy from the Legion passed away unexpectedly, Bob went to see a travel agent. He was dismayed. There was no way he would ever afford to make such an expensive trip.

He spent hours at the computer and began looking at information about Australia. Doing a search, he came across a tour company that did group tours. He went to the web page, learned that group travel was cheaper. Further investigation gave him the information about traveling free as a group leader.

He got all the details from the internet company; found out how many he needed to go free; began his campaign.

Exactly 14 months later, with a bunch of guys and their wives from the union, the Legion, his church retiree's group, and friends of friends, Bob went to Australia.

Now he's working on the 2d item on his list. He's building a tree house for his grandkids and when they are a bit older, he's hoping to take them on a trip to Alaska.
